on the gesture of the gaze

For Daniela Gutmann, film does not begin in the apparatus, but in the body. In on the gesture of the gaze, she develops an artistic-scientific practice that detaches the gaze from its invisible taken-for-grantedness and transforms it into a tangible, shared movement. Camera, body, film and viewers ceaselessly swap roles and perspectives. As a result, the gaze is not merely recorded, but its power is questioned, reflected upon and thrown back.
The camera is not a neutral eye, but a body in its own right: rolling across the ground and grass, pressed close to the skin, passed from hand to hand, merging with the movements of those filming. In this choreography, the classical hierarchy between subject and object, observer and observed, breaks down. Film becomes a collaborative process in which technology, body, medium and audience interact organically with one another. (…)

Gutmann’s films can also be interpreted as studies of movement and embodiment. Body, camera and film strip merge into a choreographed sequence. In i roll with you, the protagonist lies down on the ground with a Super 8 camera in her hand and rolls down a hill. The camera rolls along with her, whilst the film captures the light – on the outside, the rotation of the body; on the inside, the rolling of the film strip. Not only do images emerge on the light-sensitive layer, but also the physical, material experience. Movement itself becomes a cinematic form that physically shapes the analogue medium and turns the film into an active participant. This principle runs through Gutmann’s wider body of work: the rotational movement of body and camera in 361 degree or the tentative, dancing gestures in Naked on the Beach. (…)

Gutmann’s works draw on feminist and experimental film traditions. Traces of VALIE EXPORT’s performative camera partnerships, Yvonne Rainer’s deconstructions of conventional bodily and visual orders, and Rosa Barba’s sculptural-architectural extensions of the medium are evident in them.
At the same time, theoretical concepts can be identified that conceive of the body, technology and subjectivity in relational terms. Thus, Judith Butler’s performativity resonates in the cinematic and bodily gestures. Donna Haraway’s ‘becoming with’ becomes palpable in the proximity of camera and body, and Rosi Braidotti’s conception of the subject as a dynamic network is reflected in the circulation of gazes. With regard to Laura Mulvey’s concept of the ‘male gaze’, Gutmann’s films reflect this critical perspective – power relations dissolve, and visual orders become fluid. (…)
